This Is Not A Toyota Commercial

Keep moving forward.

In spite of the similarities no, this is not a Toyota
commercial.

I was on a call recently with Dr. Tom Hanson, a
sports psychologist who has worked with the NY
Yankees, other baseball teams, and numerous
Fortune 500 companies. He's written several
books, and is finishing up a high-powered course
on developing confidence, whatever you do.

Of course you know how important confidence is
to shooting so count on me in on wanting to feature
Tom's course when it's out.

Tom was mountain climbing once out in Colorado,
and found himself climbing a sheer face with a
group. He got to a point where though where fear
absolutely took over and he said the rock looked to
him like an ice rink turned up on edge. He was
paralyzed and couldn't move, freaking out.

The leader from above finally got his attention and
got him to calm down enough to listen, and told him
this:

"Tom, look down at your feet and tell me which one
is higher."

"The left one", he yelled back after being scared to
look for awhile.

"Good. What I want you to do is take your right foot
and move it higher than the left one."

"O.K. Got it."

"Now what I want you to do is take your left foot and
move it higher than the right one. Can you do that,
Tom?"

"O.K. Sure."

"Now Tom I need you to take your right foot and
move it higher than your left one. Can you do that
for me, Tom?"

"Yes, sir."

Well Tom's not still on the side of that mountain so
you know the rest of the story.

Sometimes fear is so paralyzing it's all you can do
to put one foot in front of the other, but most of the
time that's all you need to do.

Keep moving forward.

Shoot for The Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. If you have been stymied in your dream
of becoming a great shooter now is the perfect
time to start moving forward again. This time
you can come armed with info from one of the
best shooting coaches on the planet.

Let Coach Tom Nordland nurture your dream
with his new shooting DVD. Swish 2 is the
culmination of 7 years of refinements he's made
to the original Swish Shooting Method, and that
is an international best-seller. The new volume
is filled with more fundamentals and more
practical drills than ever before. In fact, absorb
this material, and you'd be qualified to coach
other shooters.

Be The Best

Remember John Wooden's definition of winning?

Do your best.

And if you do your best most of the time you will
BE the best.

Why?

Because hardly anybody else out there will be doing
their best. They'll be focused on winning and losing.

Sad but true, if you are focused on winning you can't
be focused on the task at hand. And that's a
disastrous recipe for shooting, by the way.

It's like doing an exercise on one of those big core-
training stability balls. If you don't concentrate and
focus on the movement you're doing you'll be falling
flat on one of your precious body parts before you
know it.

It's OK to focus on the result you want before a game,
or a practice. In fact, it's highly recommended. You
can even do it during a time out or before free throws.
Use your creative imagination to visualize and feel
exactly what you want to see happen.

But during the action just stay relaxed and let your
training and your practice flow out of you. Go with
the flow.

Good coaches understand the concept of flow, and
Stan Kellner fits firmly in that mold. He is so
confident in his mental methods his "Prime-Time
Shooting Machine" talks very little about the
mechanics of shooting.

He says he's seen umpteen hundreds of shooters
with picture-perfect form when nothing's on the
line, but who can't hit a shot to save their soul
when the pressure's on.

Ideally you want both. Great form and a steel trap
mind that reeks with confidence, but if you could
only have one I'd take the guy with the mental
toughness every time.

Get your mental edge sharpened today at:

http://www.deandelker.com/kellner_order.html

Shoot For the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. Another way to get a mental edge is to listen to
enpowering music. I grew up on rock and blues and
folk and have played in bands off and on since I was
14. It has brought me wonderful relationships and
experiences. It is something I was created to do.

I'm sure you've got your favorite music too, but I've
recently discovered to be a true artist on the
hardwood it helps immensely to listen to positive
inspiring music.

I've got a friend, Tania Gabrielle French who plays
and composes like an angel herself, and who is also
a world class authority on effects of music on people.
If you want to take your shooting and overall play
to a whole new level, let her show you the power of
her kind of music.

I Got Rhythm

My 8 yr old grandson wants to shoot hoops every
time I turn around. It's hard to break him of the
habit of holding the ball low though. Shooting from
the hip might have worked in the Wild, Wild West,
but it's not the way to shoot a basketball.

It starts in younger players who feel they don't have
the strength to get the ball to the basket. I've seen
those same kids hit 8th or 9th grade though, and
they're still bringing the ball up from below their
waist. That's just asking for a block party in high
school. Much better to teach them right as soon as
you can.

Here's what Dr. Hal Wissel has to say about that:

"Rhythm is more important than strength in
shooting.

Although sometimes we have younger players use a
smaller ball and shoot at an 8.5' basket, we also have
7 year olds making shots at a regulation basket by
using the down and up action of the legs.

[Either way they don't teach shooting from the hip.
Ed.]

Confidence is the most important factor in shooting
but rhythm is a close second. Rhythm and range
come from the down-and-up motion of your legs
rather than from lowering the ball or stepping into
the shot.

Start with your knees slightly flexed: Then bend
your knees and fully extend them in a down-and-
up motion. Saying the keywords DOWN and UP!!!
(with confidence and rhythm, emphasizing the word
UP) to trigger your leg action.

Let your legs and shooting arm move together. As
your legs go up, your arm goes up. As your legs
reach full extension, your back, shoulders and
shooting arm extend in a smooth, continuous
forward and upward direction toward your target.

It is important to keep the ball high with your
shooting hand facing the rim."

From my experience keeping the ball high takes
some getting used to, but after a couple of days of
practice it feels very normal. It fosters a quick
release and also provides less margin for error.

To get more great teaching like this and more
importantly to see it in action you need to glue
your eyeballs to Hal's 'Confidence, Rhythm, and
Mechanics DVD available now at:

http://www.deandelker.com/wissel_order.html

Shoot For the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. When you're shooting off the pass the down
motion of the legs comes just before the catch and
the shot goes up as the legs go up providing for a
quicker more accurate release.

To find out how to use Hal's highly effective
shooting methods and footwork in real world,
game-time situations you need his second DVD
- 'Off the Pass, Off the Dribble, and In the Post.'

That is exactly what you need to be a shooter
who can create his own open looks. That's also
available now at:

The Old-School Winning Ways

Players fifty years ago wanted to win just as much
as players today ... The difference is everybody
worries about it more today because of the media
and the attention they give to the question of who's
winning and who's losing. Those are the wrong
questions. The correct question is: Did I make my
best effort? That's what matters. The rest of it just
gets in the way.

- John Wooden

It's not a question of winning or losing because I
believe we were all created with the desire to be
winners. It is though a question of how you define
winning.

John Wooden defines it as knowing you have made
your best effort.

What about you?

Winning games will be a natural by-product of
always doing your best.

Shoot For The Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. Winning is something you choose every day by
what you think, feel, believe, and do.

Seek that in every area of your life - spiritual, mental,
emotional, social, healthwise, fitnesswise, careerwise,
with family, relationships, money and much more.

If you want to make your best effort as a shooter you
need to learn to emulate those who are great shooters.
That is in mechanics, but it's also in how you think and
how you feel.

If you want to solidify your mechanics Dr. Hal Wissel's
DVD's are a great place to get solid information. Learn
how to move your body for best results at putting the
ball in the hole now at:

The Evolution of a Champion

Udonis Haslem, the undersized blue-collar NBA
power forward was in Gainesville yesterday. It
had been a couple of years since the last time he'd
come home to his alma mater. This time he was
walking taller than usual though. After all he was
a world-champion now.

Those who've known him since Miami Senior High
days though will tell you he's always had a
champion's heart.

He came to the University of Florida as an
unheralded recruit and led the Gators to four
straight NCAA tournament appearances. As a
chunky back-to-the basket center he even
propelled his team to the National Championship
game as a sophmore.

When the NBA passed on him out of college he chose
to play in Europe and used the time to lose 40 lbs,
develop a mid-range game, and become a beast as a
rebounder and defender.

By now you know Pat Riley and the Miami Heat
have taken a chance on this overachiever and have
been rewarded with one of the league's primo
warriors. He's a player who contributes in every
way as his 17 points, 10 rebounds, and defensive
job on Dirk Nowitzki in this year's championship
game attest.

For the past couple of weeks U.D. has been working
with shooting coach David Thorpe on extending his
shooting range.

'I have to do it because Shaq sucks up all the paint.'
Haslem jokes.

And Florida Gator coach Billy Donovan had this to
say about his former player:

'He's one of the guys who gets it. One thing I've
always respected about him is it's all about winning
with Undonis. He has found ways to evolve himself
and he's found a way to affect winning at the next
level. He's a warrior, mentally.'

One of the keys to long term success in anything is
being able to read the prevailing winds and adapting.
Like course corrections with a guided missle we all
have to zig zag ourselves to our eventual goals.

'Cybernetics' is the term author and plastic surgeon
Dr. Maxwell Maltz' coined for that kind of goal seeking
activity in the 60's. In fact, it comes from the Greek
word for steering a boat.

Psycho-Cybernetics then is how to use your thoughts,
imagination, and feelings to steer your life to desirable
goals.

For all you'll ever need to know about this process you
want to check out Dr. Maltz' lifetime work, the 'Zero
Resistance Living' course. It's available only at:

http://www.deandelker.com/zero_resistance.html

Shoot for the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. For all you'll ever need to know about how to use
your mind on the basketball court you want the books,
CD's, and DVD's of Coach Stan Kellner. There is a world
of powerful information there on how to be the player
and shooter you dream of being. Today is your day to
start evolving at:

What You Can Learn From Cats

I'm not talking about "Cats" the musical, as good
as that is. And I love musicals, but I'm interested
in the real animals tonight.

Big cats.

Lion, tiger, leopard, and cheetah cats.

'Eye of the Tiger' from Rocky III is a lot more than
just the #1 song of 1982. In our culture now it
represents the essence of single-minded focus and
desire. Interesting too it was sung by a group called,
"Survivor".

Is there any better picture of concentration and
focus than that of a hungry lion or tiger stalking
it's prey?

And you know why?

Because there's no welfare line for lions.

The big cat concentrates because he has to. His
survival depends on it. He doesn't want to go
hungry.

Most of the time though we humans concentrate
because we choose to.

And to be a great basketball shooter you have to
have the hunger and focus of a lion. You have to
feel your very survival is at stake, because desire
and 'want to' are what separate the pretenders
from true champions.

Not just in the fancy arenas in front of big crowds
either. In the hot sweaty cracker box gym you
shoot in. In the early morning hours when you get
100 shots in before breakfast. That's how winners
are made. It's a tried and true formula.

You can increase your hunger for shooting though
by feasting on video of astounding marksman like
Dr. Hal Wissel's son Paul.

See him almost will the ball in the basket with
perfect form while sitting in a chair at the 3 point
line in Hal's "Confidence, Rythm, and Mechanics"
fundamental of shooting DVD. See him shoot like
his life depends on it, and you can't help want to
do the same.

And see him shoot off the dribble, off the pass, off
the curl, and in the post from all angles in Hal's
second, advanced shooting DVD.

See it, believe it, and do it yourself at:

http://www.deandelker.com/wissel_order.html

Shoot for the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. Stan Kellner has a drill in his "Beyond The
Absolute Limit" book called "Bear-Offs" which
develops hunger, aggressiveness and intensity
in all types of players almost overnight.

I won't give it away, but no physical contact is
involved. It starts by pairing up polite, reserved
players with more intense ones and ends with
both shouting "I Am A Beast" over an over
again to the cheers of all their teammates.

And see ordinary shooters become beasts to
be rekonned with on Stan's "Prime-Time
Shooting Machine" DVD too.

If you want to get the most out of yourself and
those you work with, don't miss any of Stan's
genius methods at:

You Need Never Lose Again

Coach John Wooden says you are never defeated
till you start blaming someone else.

That's when you become a victim, and you'll never
even look for the creative ideas and actions that
would bring you victory.

So if you don't ever want to lose again start taking
responsibility for what happens in your life. There
is real magic in that.

Even if the scoreboard sometimes says your team
lost, you will still be a winner because you will learn
from that situation and always get better if you are
owning your experience.

I know that is short and simple, but I can't think of
any other way to say it.

Try putting this into practice though and let me know
how it goes. You'll never go back to whining,
complaining, and blaming.

Coach Tom Nordland teaches awareness and taking
responsibility for your shooting as well as any coach I
know. See what is possible with his new Swish II DVD

What's Holding You Back

Do you know what is holding you back from living
the no-limit lifestyle we talked about yesterday?

If you don't practice shooting as much as you want
to, for example, why not? Don't be discouraged if
you're mystified. It is a question for the ages.

In the 1st century AD a man they call Paul the
apostle described himself in a similar situation in
the world's bestselling book.

"I don't understand what I'm doing. What I want
to do, I don't, but what I hate, that's what I end
up doing."

Paul was describing a universal human experience,
and he said it was due to the pressure of "the law".
I call it human nature. As they say, "To err is
human."

The obvious question then is - How do I become
super-human?

Step one is to know what you are worth because
you will only achieve what you think you deserve.

If you don't believe you deserve success you will
either languish where you are in life, or you will
make headway only to sabotage yourself back to
where you feel comfortable. It works like a
setpoint.

I personally believe you are of infinite worth
because of my faith, but you have to come to
your conclusion on your own. Feel free to
email me at dean@deandelker.com if you
want to know more what I believe and why.

are worth and what you can do about it.

Livin' The No-Limit Life

Is poker as big where you are as it is in Florida?

Even in the retirement belt I think it is now more
popular than bingo. Churches who used to make
fun of Catholics for their favorite fundraising game
are now sponsoring charity poker tournaments of
their own.

A local businessman I know even runs an
organization called "Poker For A Purpose" which runs
monthly tournaments for a set of rotating charities.

Hundreds participate every month. Your entry fee is a
donation, and you can win prizes donated by local
merchants. My wife Joan and I have made a few final
tables ourselves. It's still close but no cigars for me, but
she came in third and won a nice IPOD in June.

It's also really big with the college crowd. Cash games
are illegal in Florida, but I saw recently where two
popular watering holes are offering nightly games with
free buy-in where you can accumulate points good for
food and beverages.

And the game of choice is the one that's been
popularized on ESPN's World Series of Poker -
No-Limit Texas Hold'Em.

Since poker's been with us a long time I've got a
suspicion it's the 'No-Limit' part that fascinates
us so much. There is something exhilarating about
being able to go 'all in' and win big at any time.

Wouldn't it be great if we could live our lives in no-
limit mode more often too? There are many times
where if we did, especially on the basketball court
we would come out winners.

Everybody I know lives with limiting beliefs though.
Well not everybody. A few adults and most of the
kids I know don't, but it's hard to grow up and not
get socialized and saddled with other people's well-
intentioned limitations.

Not wanting you to get hurt they try to build a
protective bubble around you. Or maybe they just
project their scarcity mentality, worries, and fears
on you because they know of no other way.
Perhaps too, many of your limitations are self-
imposed.

The late Dr. Maxwell Maltz dealt with limitations
from all angles in his classic 'Psycho-Cybernetics'
success book. It has sold over 30 million copies
since it debuted in the 60's.

Now his heirs and the folks at the Psycho-
Cybernetics Foundation have compiled all Dr.
Maltz lectures and writings (including handwritten
notes) into the ultimate lifestyle course they call
'Zero Resistance Living'.

ZRL is simple enough you can see positive results in
a matter of minutes, but as your experience grows it
is complete enough to use for the rest of your life.

Start your no-limit lifestyle today by pushing your
chips in at:

http://www.deandelker.com/zero_resistance.html

Shoot For the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. Most likely you have settled for limits in your
basketball game too. Coach Stan Kellner has spent a
lifetime teaching players how to blast through those
limits and reach for the prize inside.

There is probably no physical reason you can't shoot
like the best in the game, for instance. If you can learn
to think like the pure shooter, you can shoot like he
does.

Don't be a 'know-it-all' and not ask for help. Let Stan
guide you and obliterate your limits today at:

I Can't Afford It

I had a couple of emails lately with people saying how
much they'd like to buy something on
http://www.deandelker.com
but they couldn't afford it.

Believe me I know that feeling. Until the last couple
of years when the kids got older my wife Joan and I
were raising 5 children on a single income. It was a
deliberate choice, but things were almost always tight.

Even when Joan started working part-time I still felt
'We can't afford it' was my permanent mantra.

I know today rather than giving in to that kind of
feeling, it is far, far better to ask an enpowering
question like, 'How CAN I afford that?'

Not that you expect to come up with an instant
answer, but when you pose the question and give
your subconscious a crack at it you'll usually come
up with ways to make it happen.

I also used to believe the adage 'It takes money, to
make money', but I've been convinced lately that's
a cop-out. What it takes to make money most of
the time are creative ideas. Sure there are plans and
action involved too, but the seeds to your success are
in those ideas.

If you've found yourself wishing you had more money
for a worthwhile need lately have you ever thought
about promoting a basketball camp in your area?

If you have time, are willing to do the legwork and
promoting, know coaches in your area, and can find a
good set of dates you can make some good money.

I'm thinking about doing that over the Christmas
break myself.

Coach Stan Kellner's 'Yes I Can' camps have a lot to
offer. You only need one day free to host their
powerful shooting camp, and that would probably
be a unique offering in your area and well attended.
Their full basketball cybernetics camp is also
awesome.

Check it out at:

http://www.yesicansports.com/bcamp2.html

Shoot For The Stars,

Dean Delker - The Dean 0f Shooting Hoops

P.S. Coach Stan has taught basketball players how
to integrate mind and body and get amazing results
on the hardwood for over 30 years. His basketball
cybernetics programs have helped untold numbers
of players break through their self-imposed limits,
create more productive self-images, and reach new
performance levels.

Stan's new shooting DVD demystifies the process and
has you getting positive results in far less time. It's not
unusual for several kids in his camps to hit over 100
shots in a row after learning Stan's methods.

I Have Gas

You might remember my other passion besides
hoops is music. I played in a band called 'The
Lavender Hill Mob' which made good money and
was regionally popular in the Kentucky, Indiana,
Illinois tri-state area in the late 60's and early 70's.

I played rhythm guitar then, and switched to bass
in the early 80's in another band. I still play in a
rockin' worship band, and occasionally in a blues
all-star band.

Almost every musician I know has bad GAS.

Gear Aquisition Syndrome we call it. We're always
looking for the latest and greatest, (or oldest and
most-classic) guitars, basses, amps, strings, pre-
amps, effects pedals, etc. You name it. We want it.

Heck, there's even a cottage industry out there
pushing super high-tech guitar cords. Forum
boards fill up with people arguing about this kind
of stuff.

The thinking is, if I get X, Y, or Z that will make me
the player I want to be. Nothing wrong with good
equipment, mind you, but guitar playing is more
about your hands and your soul.

So please don't fall into that GAS mentality with your
shooting. You don't need to be looking for the flavor
of the month. Shooting is all about meat and potatoes
fundamentals.

One of the reasons I choose the products I do is
because they stress fundamentals. They have
staying power and fulfill a unique need in your
training. Otherwise I don't carry them.

Not just physical fundamentals either. Lee Milteer has
a book called, "Success Is An Inside Job", and that is
SO TRUE.

Coach Stan Kellner really knows how to teach those
inner fundamentals for basketball. His new shooting
DVD actually shows you how to become a shooting
machine. You still have to take what he gives you,
put it into action, and make it your own, but all the
raw materials are there for super stardom.

Go Lateral Young Man

As Coach Tim Kauppinen pointed out to me the other
day, in basketball you don't run in a straight line very
often. To set yourself up for the best looks at the
basket you really need lightning quick lateral speed.

Tim says the key to sideways quickness and speed is
to lift the foot in the direction you want to go and
always be pushing off the opposite foot. If you're
trying to plant your lead foot and pull, you're slowing
yourself down.

Here are a 3 simple ways to train to be a bolt of
lightning on the hardwood.

1. Run laterally through agility ladders. If you're
doing it wrong you'll be dragging that ladder
behind you before you get very far.

2. Run laterally up steps. If you do this one wrong
you'd better be on carpeted stairs 'cause you're
probably going down.

3. Run laterally up hills. Much harder if you've got
the technique wrong.

Don't forget Coach Tim has a killer hill and step sprinting
program that will get you superior conditioning results in
far less time than traditional methods. With the time you
save, you can probably shoot 100 extra shots a day. If
you're ready to add uphill training to your bag of tricks
now's the time to zip right over to:

The Hidden Benefits of Shooting Hoops

I wonder if you realize what you've gotten yourself
into wanting to be a great shooter? It's actually
possible to set yourself up for life.

When you visualize yourself putting the ball in the
hole you are expanding your self-image to new
levels. You are focusing on what you want, and
letting the inner image change. Then the doing
becomes easier.

When you see yourself as a shooter your life can
change.

You will have learned a ton about desire, belief,
confidence, your mind, goals, perserverance, and
I could go on and on. What you learn on the court
you can apply to most anything you do in life, and
come out a winner. That is priceless.

The processes you learn can also make you more
successful in love, relationships, money, career,
spirituality, education, research, business - every
good thing you want.

For instance I'm sure you've heard the phrase 'time
is money'. And that's true up to a point, but really
isn't it ideas that make money. Creativity is a mental
skill, and as you sharpen your mind on the court, and
apply those same skills to the money game you will
have a much brighter future.

The best, most comprehensive mental program I've
ever seen for basketball comes from Coach Stan
Kellner. I was raving about the book yesterday, and
there is a wealth of information there.

It may be the best buy I've ever seen. It sells for $15,
and there are hundreds of powerful ideas to act on.

Be Master Of Your Own Fate

Champions do not become
champions on the court.

They are merely recognized
on the court.

They BECOME champions in
their DAILY ROUTINE.

Players do not really decide
their future ...

But they decide their habits,
And their habits decide their
FUTURE!!!

- Anonomous

What kind of shooting habits are YOU building
today?

It's a lot easier to build those habits when your mind
is clear of doubts and focused on your goals.

You may not believe how thoroughly Coach Stan
Kellner covers that in his book, 'Beyond The Absolute
Limit' till you read it for yourself.

In one chapter he has students in his camps establish
their best vertical leap, not on a wall, but in relation to
the basket. Say one young camper can touch the
bottom of the net.

Then he has them get quiet, breathe deeply, and relax
while he leads them through a guided visualization. He
has them imagining power and energy collecting over
their heads then saturating their body. Energizing their
muscles, etc. And he has them visualize their bodies
being light as a bird's.

Lastly he has them go out and try to get the rim again,
and almost without exception the kids jump 2 to 4
inches higher than their previous bests. With no
plyometrics,
fancy shoes, etc.

All that just from breaking internal limitations the kids
had. See the miracles for yourself at:

How Not To Hit A Homerun

When I played Little League baseball there was a
big husky kid named Carl M. Carl was a catcher
and a darn good one. An all-star.

Carl had a big weakness at the plate though, and
even at that level most of the pitchers in the league
knew about it.

You see Carl had hit two home runs in his first two
games, and the rest of the season he was addicted
to the long ball. He tried to murder every pitch that
came over the plate and most of them that didn't.

Truth is, most of the time Carl was an easy out.

Truth is you will be too, if you think like Carl.

You should be moving in the direction of your
goals every day, but you don't have to swing for the
fence every time you're at bat. You probably don't
need a grand slam today.

It's more important to do the little things well, and
do them consistently than it is to make the big
score. In fact, it's the little victories along the way
that prepare you for the big pushes when you need
to make them.

If you savor your victories as they come and
celebrate them passionately you will build a winning
attitude, and also be able to handle the inevitable
adversity with power and grace. And you will get
to your long-term goal that much faster.

In his Prime Time Shooting DVD Coach Stan Kellner
says it's more important you learn how to miss a shot
than how to make one.

Think about it. I had to. But if missing puts you in a
big funk it's awfully hard to build any kind of lasting
confidence. And without confidence you are dead
meat.

Learn how to miss shots the right way today with
Coach Stan's Ultimate Shooting Method DVD.

Giant Badgers Run Uphill On Two Legs

Have I been reading the tabloids again?

No, but Coach Tim Kauppinen saw it in a home-
town sports weekly. They weren't talking about
those fierce little mammals though. They were
talking about the off-season conditioning program
of the University of Wisconsin basketball team.

They were doing interval training on the very same
hill Tim uses for his workouts. Tim does say they
could make fewer trips up, if they sprinted at full
intensity and get results in less time, but he's still
excited to see them doing the uphill training.

Me thinks if it's good enough for the Big-Ten's
Badgers who are well known for their toughness and
conditioning it's something you might well want to know
more about.

So I've made it easy for you to get the skinny on uphill
sprinting. Studies are rolling in from all over, but Coach
Tim can tell you all about it at:

Chariots of Fire Redux

Another line I love from 'Chariots of Fire' is when
the Headmaster at Cambridge is addressing the
incoming freshmen at their first dinner and says:

'Let each of you discover where your true chance
for greatness lies. Seize that chance and let no
power on Earth deter you'

Of course that chance came for Eric Liddel and
Harold Abrahams on the Olympic track in 1924.
Where will your chance for greatness lie?

If it's going to happen for you on the basketball
court you're going to need a good set of wheels.
Yes, a pair of strong legs is a necessity if you
want to be a great shooter. Every shooting coach
I've ever met talks about the importance of leg
drive.

You can always use more strength, stamina,
endurance, speed and explosiveness.

The NFL Hall of Fame rusher Walter Payton, who
was the personification of leg drive, had a big-time
training secret. In the off-season he did hill sprints
religiously. So did all-world wide receiver Jerry Rice, a
nd heavyweight champion boxer Rocky Marciano.

You've probably run steps before in your training,
but do you know the benefits of sprinting them? Do
you know what kind of edge that could give you on
the basketball court?

Coach Tim Kauppinen a top sprint coach from
Wisconsin can answer that question. You can see
what Tim has to say about it in print over at:

http://www.deandelker.com/hill_sprints.html

Make Every Shot Count,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. Matt Furey used hill sprints to propel himself to
NCAA and World Championships in the martial arts,
and he recognizes Tim as a world-class expert on
these secret training techniques. Learn over 20
dynamic routines for both hills and stairs today at:

How To See Your Future

In his book 'Sacred Hoops' Phil Jackson relates how
B.J. Armstrong would use visualizations before
games.

'I believe if I can take twenty or thirty minutes
before each game and visualize what's going to
happen I'll be able to react to it without thinking
because I will already have seen it in my mind. I
can see myself making a shot or boxing out or
getting a loose ball.

And then when I see that come up during the game
I don't think about it. I do it. There are no second
thoughts. No hesitation.'

If it's that important for professionals to use their
imagination in preparing for a game how much
more so for the rest of us.

Sometimes it's not easy though. It comes naturally
to some. Others struggle with it. That's why I
recommend Stan Kellner's materials on basketball
cybernetics. He will teach you dozens and dozens of
ways to turbo-charge your game through learning
to use your imagination positively.

I know you can do it. You already use your mind
negatively when you worry about anything. You
run a 'what if' scenerio in your imagination, don't
you?

So why can't you use your imagination positively
for your own good?

You might just need a little help first. Then you'll
be taking off like a Saturn rocket. Isn't that what
coaches are for.

Shoot For the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

A Promise Kept

In one of my early emails I told you 'Hoosiers' was
my second favorite movie and promised one day
I'd talk about my all-time fave.

It happens to be another sports flick, and an
Academy Award winner. My favorite line from
it is:

'I believe God made me for a purpose, but I also
believe he made me fast, and when I run, I can feel
His pleasure.

The movie, of course, is 'Chariots of Fire'.

There is a very real sense of accomplishment and
pleasure when you are in that relaxed performance
state commonly called 'the zone'. Anything you do
will be better done if you are relaxed. And feel-
good brain chemicals are released too.

It's what the Psycho-Cybernetics Foundation calls
'Zero Resistance', and one of your primary missions
as an athlete should be to learn how to get in that
state and stay there.

In his book 'Sacred Hoops' Phil Jackson talks about
how during time outs he gets his players to mentally
relax and concentrate on what he is saying by
leading them in a quickie visualization he calls 'safe
spot'.

While they are grabbing a drink and toweling off he
encourages them to take a short mental vacation
and visit that place in their imagination where they
feel most relaxed and secure.

Now some people think Phil is a bit of a kook, but
who can argue with his results. His 9 NBA title-
winning teams tie him with Red Auerbach for the
most ever.

Now you see why I think so highly of what Stan
Kellner teaches. If you want to understand how to
maximize your mind power to win games, his book
and basketball visualization CD are unbeatable.

And if you want to become automatic as a shooter
his Ultimate Shooting Method DVD is a must.

No Shortcuts

A martial arts student went to his teacher and said
earnestly, 'I am devoted to studying your martial
system. How long will it take to master it?'

The teacher's reply was casual,

'Ten years.'

Impatiently, the student answered,

'But I want to master it faster. I will work very hard.
I will practice everyday, ten or more hours a day if I
have to. How long will it take then?'

The teacher thought for a moment,

'20 years in that case', he said.

The incredulous student asked, 'Why, Master?

The master said something to the effect of,

'Because you will have one eye in the future and one
eye in the moment.'

My thanks to Jason Brightwell for sending that to
gripmeister John Wood who I heard it from.

Let it be a reminder that in your shooting
development there is no substitute for paying
attention. Putting in more time won't help a bit if
you are going through the motions mindlessly.

You need to be actively working to integrate mind
and body to become a scoring machine.

A great way to build that mind power oft ignored
is during your strength and conditioning.

How do you workout?

What do you mean, Dean? I go in the gym and jump
on the machines, or I run stairs, or I use the eliptical
trainer, etc. Or maybe you're a free weight guy or gal.

Not what do you do. How do you do it?

Is your mind fully engaged or taking a vacation when
you train? You may not think so now, but it makes a
huge difference.

I've got a radical recommmendation for you.
Bodyweight exercises done from all angles with
controlled deep breathing. There is nothing like it.
Look for more in the coming days.

OK, if you're impatient like most people and you
want to know what the heck I'm talking about I'm
going to defer to the master and let my coach tell
you all about it. Jump up now and run to:

Make Every Shot Count,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. John Wood applies many of Matt's principles in
teaching you hand, wrist, and grip strength. He is a
true master in that world.

And if you want to feel like your opponents are
putty in your hands it helps to have strong hands
first. The best place to start is with John's portable,
industrial strength grippers.

The Heart of the Game

There's a new movie coming out, an award winning
documentary called 'The Heart Of The Game'. It's
the story of a Washington state high school girl's
basketball team, and it already won an award at the
Toronto Film Festival.

Here are some reviews I've seen:

'One of the best documentaries I've ever seen'.

The Oregonian

'Makes you want to stand up and cheer'.

The Detroit Free Press

'An enjoyable and moving basketball documentary
full of girl power and heart'

The Atlanta Journal

It's showing at our local arts theater next month,
and you better believe I'll be there.

I like the poster for it too. Across the top in big
block letters it says:

IT'S YOUR LIFE. MAKE EVERY SHOT COUNT.

You can't get much better advice than that.

Shoot for the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. Stan Kellner has been working with kids on the
basketball court for over 30 years and his new DVD
on 'How To Become A Prime-Time Shooting
Machine' is full of powerful cybernetic techniques
that have proven themselves to work time after
time after time.

I hesitate to mention this because you might think
I'm overhyping, but Stan tells me he's seen more
than a few kids in his camps hitting 100 or more
consecutive jumpshots after he's taken them
through his Ultimate Shooting Method.

Compete Like A Winner

Pete Rose was one of the most competitive guys
baseball has ever seen. Charlie Hustle. The man
would do virtually anything to win.

Did he step over the line though? Arguably, yes.

If you are driven person who must win at all costs
competition can lead you down a dangerous path.
Like the Force in Star Wars, it has a dark side.

It can drive you crazy.

It can turn you into a self-destructive risk taker of
the highest order, and it can positively wreck a
team's chemistry.

I'm not talking about good-natured, honest, friendly
competition. That is good for your team, and good
for you. It builds comraderie, unity, and
self-confidence.

The best way to make sure your competitive juices
are being channeled in a positive direction is to
always be competing against yourself first and
foremost.

You should routinely seek to set new personal
records in your practicing and your playing. Keep
track. There is a real magic in counting. I don't
understand exactly why, but I've found it to be
true. I'm not talking about selfishly seeking stats,
but I am talking about glorying in personal bests.

Stan Kellner has a game he uses in his shooting
camps and on his new Prime-Time Shooting
Machine DVD called 'Personal Best'. The goal is
to determine the best string of consecutive jump
shots you can hit in a 10 minute span of time.

He has you do that as a benchmark before
teaching his Ultimate Shooting Method. Then
he has you see how much your 'Personal Best'
has improved.

Great stuff, and you can now order Stan's power-
packed book, action CD, and become a prime-
time shooting machine with the Ultimate
Basketball Cybernetics Total Package. See what
all the buzz is about by hustling on over to:

P.S. You will be very pleased at the pricing on this
package deal. I'm sure most people will want the
full treatment that brings mind and body together

The shooting DVD is the crown jewel for our
purposes, but Stan's book and CD are worth their
weight in gold too. See what I mean at:

3 Simple Steps to Shooting Success

Has anybody ever called you a dreamer?

Do you remember sitting in a classroom somewhere
and wishing you were anyplace else? Did you get in
trouble for daydreaming?

Why is it dreamers are so persecuted anyway? Isn't
dreaming what fuels most, if not all, human
achievement? Wasn't everything you have right now
somebody's dream at one time?

And how did dreamers get such a bad reputation?

The truth is many people don't act on their dreams,
and that makes them just fantasies. It DOES take a
lot of guts to make a dream come true, but the
rewards are out of this world.

There are 3 simple steps to having success in
shooting, or anything else you want to do.

Dream, Dare, and Do.

Think about it. For now, start spending time
dreaming and focusing on what you want every
day. That's a great start.

Shoot For the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. I learned a new word today. It's akin to the word
orthodoxy, which means believing the right things. It's
another big word called orthopraxy, and it means
doing or practicing the right things.

We all know important practice is to shooting success,
but what are you practicing? If you're looking for a
great shooter to model yourself after I highly
recommend the NBA quick-release mechanics of Paul
Wissel as he demonstrates on his dad's DVD's you can

The Accidental Tourist

My wife and I did the tourist thing today in Cozumel,
Mexico. I had on a t-shirt that said 'Vote For Pedro,
and all your dreams will be filled' from the Napolean
Dynamite movie. My kids gave it to me, and the
Mexicans loved it.

There's another movie called 'The Accidental Tourist'
That wasn't us. We knew what we were looking for,
and we got it.

Got me thinking though there are two kinds of people
in the world. Those who live deliberately, with purpose,
going after what they desire, making things happen.
And those who live accidently and take what life gives
them by default.

The former work from a pool of resources limited
mostly by their own internal imagination and
creativity . They tap into the abundance of the
universe and take responsibility for what happens
with their lives.

The latter work from a pool of chance. They might get
what they need and they might not, but everything
happens to them, and they either feel lucky or a
victim.

As shooters you should be in the first group. You
already know you want to win, to be champions, to
be popular, etc. There is something you want from
the basketball experience. And if you work on
clearing out your mental limitations the sky is the
limit.

Shoot For The Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

mastery of the basketball shot is possible, and

What Road Are You On

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less travelled by,
and that has made all the difference

Robert Frost

What is your definition of success?

Hitting the worthwhile goals you have set, right?

O.K. That's partly true. Most people would say
success means having a meaningful destination and
getting there.

But what about that thing called quality of life?

And like most of you I've grown up being preached
to about how the tough get going, and where your
nose belongs (held to the grindstone).

I've seen people grit their teeth and fight, and strive,
and stress, and sweat, and struggle against a cold,
cruel world they were determined to vanquish, come
hell or high water. And I've seen them hit their goals
and glory in how hard the road was.

But I've rarely seen them happy no matter what they
accomplish.

Let's face it there are dirty jobs where only the strong
survive. Where the harder the road, and the tougher
the training the better your chances of ultimate
success.

If you are a Navy SEAL you've got it rough for a
reason, and you have my utmost respect. That's
great for the short-term tactical missions you're
called upon to carry out, but it's not so great for
building a life around.

I've also seen people who make it look easy. People
who have fun and a sense of calm and inner peace,
and yet seem to get ahead without creating chaos
and frustration, strained relationships or bad
health.

That's the lifestyle I want, and it comes from living
inside-out. It is always going to involve work and
taking action, but there's a way where your "yoke is
easy and your burden is light". It is by taking what I
call "inspired action", and it's easier than you think to
achieve.

Shoot for the Stars,

Dean - The Dean of Shooting Hoops

P.S. I got an advanced copy of Stan Kellner's new
shooting DVD, and it is everything I'd hoped for
and more. It's called, "How To Become A Prime-
Time Shooting Machine with The Ultimate Shooting
Method."

It is all about taking "inspired action" in shooting the
basketball, and it is a gem. I'll have a way for you to
order it in the next week or two.

P.S.S. The Psycho-Cybernetics Foundation's "Zero
Resistance Living" course is the master plan for
achievement in every area of your life using your

action". Learn how to start wiping out all resistance
