When Cuba Conquered Kentucky

You do remember when Fidel invaded the States don't you. Is this guy totally insane, you're probably saying. I mean you knew public schools were falling down on the job, but you still can't imagine them having missed that one.

OK, you're right. "When Cuba Conquered Kentucky" is the Bluegrass State's version of "Hoosiers", my 2nd favorite sports movie. I'll tell you about my favorite another time, but I'm talking about the true classic underdog story of the Cuba Cubs who won the 1952 high school state championship against the likes of Louisville Manual, which would go on to produce a Wes Unseld in another decade or so.

If you've found your way here you'll know I'm dedicated to do everything possible to help you become dead-eye sharpshooter on the basketball court. That doesn't mean I won't talk about anything related to basketball though.

Cuba is a tiny town in the southwest part of the state, and to win the title they had to criscross the commonwealth and beat the best of the large county and big city schools. There was none of this Class 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5A stuff then (or now for that matter) and every year the Sweet 16 usually produced a couple of David vs Goliath matchups, but 1952 was a year for the ages.

The year before the Cubs had made it all the way to the championship only to lose to the #1 ranked Clark County team. Though thoroughly devastated the team realized they weren't hitting their shots because they were flat worn out by 4 games in 4 days. Then and there they decided that meant they had a whole year to build their level of endurance and that's what they vowed to do.

The lesson for you shooters is to be absolutely dedicated to conditioning. Listen to your coach. Train hard and train smart. You'll notice the difference in your shooting.

I learned the Cuba story when my brother Ged (Seriously that's what we call him, but it's a nickname based off his initials) gave me a delightful book by Marianne Walker, an English teacher at the community college in my hometown. And as read the principal at Henderson County High School had been the starting point guard on the championship Cuba team.

If you're a player, or a fan, or a coach, or a parent, or all the above this is a book you want in your library. Here's a handy link if you do.
